SRH & Behaviour Change Communication

Since inception, Somero has run activities to provide information on Sexual Reproductive Health; over 2,000 in and out of school young people have been reached. In 2013, we were trained by Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevoelkerung (DSW) an SRH training center to be the ambassadors of SRH right among slums youth.

In December 2014, Save the Children Uganda started working with us to test the e-based learning program on Sexual reproductive health called “Learning About Living” (LAL) which also equipped our e-learning unit with 12 computers. Until June 2014, 72 beneficiaries had benefited from the program. This program is part of the ongoing project is called “Keep it Real” implemented by Save the Children and ACODEV.

Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) is a program designedDSC_1288 to achieve measurable objectives reaching out to the vulnerable girls, boys and young women benefitting from different  projects of Somero Uganda. Behavior change communication recognizes that behavior change is a process and that the girls and young women usually move through several intermediate steps before they change their behavior. The key elements of behaviour change communication are:

  • Full participation by the audience
  • Recognition of behavior change as a social, individual, and community process
  • Learning through fun changing behaviors

A single session is not enough to deal with the complexity of behavior change, since behavior is something that is learned through socialization. These sessions are then designed and assumed that participants come with different behaviours and that they will leave with more refined behaviour and a greater understanding, of the need of behaviour change.
